Space Rogue


I first played a computer port version of Space Rogue in early high school (freshman year, maybe), and my younger brother and I ended up spending hours with the delightful game. It had three levels of gameplay (space shoot 'em up, map navigation, and starbase RPG). There was nothing all that special about the plot -- simply a series of tasking (gathering inventory, levelling up, and talking to NPCs to move the plot along) which is basically any RPG game out there, but it did it in such beautiful balance that it certainly has left a mark on my videogame archetype.
